Should You Upgrade From Gas Heating?

Blog

Heating and cooling systems are essential in every home. Faulty gas heating puts your safety and health in danger. When your gas heating unit fails prematurely, it forces you to make a crucial decision on whether to call for heating services or to replace the unit. The decision to replace your heating unit also provides you with a valuable opportunity to upgrade from gas heating. Unit replacement is costly. An upgrade might cost you even more. Yet, there are important reasons for you to upgrade your gas heating:

Failure of the Unit

The obvious reason for replacement and upgrade is the permanent failure of the gas heating unit. Gas heating units usually require little attention other than occasional maintenance. Corrosive agents that are present in the atmosphere tend to shorten the lifespan of your gas heating equipment. However, even if you consciously maintain your gas heating unit through routine heating repair and maintenance, like most mechanical equipment, it eventually wears out because of old age. If heating services can no longer revive the full functionality of your gas heating, this is a good opportunity for you to upgrade from gas heating.

Obsolete Gas Heaters

One of the primary reasons why heating repair services can no longer save old gas heaters is that they have become obsolete. Some heaters cannot be repaired because the spare parts are no longer available for sale. This is especially true for the types of gas heating units that have been phased out due to failure in meeting current emission and safety standards. It is generally recommended to replace gas heating units that are more than 10 years old.

Energy efficiency

Another reason for upgrading your gas heating unit is to aim for higher energy efficiency. Older gas heating units are already surprisingly efficient. However, recent heating systems have an efficiency level that can be almost entirely waste-free. With this energy efficiency, your investment for unit replacement can be offset by your savings from fuel bills, electricity bills, and carbon footprint reduction. It is estimated that near-perfect efficiency of a heating unit in an average cold climate household can reduce more than a ton of carbon dioxide emission per year.

Upgrading from the older gas heating unit into more modern ones is a tough decision. If heating repair services can no longer maintain your unit, replacement is a good opportunity to upgrade your system. Obsolete gas heaters should also be replaced because of the problems they cause to health and safety. Lastly, energy efficiency and savings also provide consolation to upgrade your gas heating.

Cool off Your AC Bill

Every summer, I agonized over energy bills that would shoot into the stratosphere as a result of my efforts to keep cool in the heat. Every time I turned the temperature down, my bills increased. This summer, I decided to take some of the control over my energy bill back. I installed reflective film on my windows that reduced the amount of light and heat coming into the house. I started serving more cold meals or asking my husband to barbecue outside, so that my air conditioner didn't have to compete with the hot stove, and I started doing laundry at night to reduce appliance heat in the house at peak times. I also had ceiling fans installed. So far, the difference in my bill has been tremendous. This blog is a way for me to explore other ways to reduce energy drain during the summer months.
