The Convenience And Drawbacks Of Window AC Units

Blog

When it comes to improving your air conditioning, it is better to take care of business now instead of waiting. That is, there is no reason to wait, spend more money, and end up living in a hot home that doesn't have proper air conditioning. If you invest in a window AC unit now, you will be fully prepped and ready for the summer heat. This article explains the main drawbacks and advantages of window AC units.

Window Units are Convenient

Window AC units are popular because they are so convenient. All they need is electricity to run. On top of this, they can be mounted inside any movable window very easily. As long as it fits within the opening, it can be mounted on the windowsill. Surprisingly, most units can be mounted without any power tools. In fact, they don't even need to be secured to the frame. This means that you can pretty much buy a window AC unit at a home improvement store and have it up and running by the end of the day.

Drawbacks of Window Units

The problem with window unit is that they do use a lot of electricity. Of course, modern units are going to be more energy efficient, but since they rely solely on electricity, running a window AC unit for an entire day is going to be costly. In fact, it is probably not a good idea to rely solely on window units to cool down your home. First of all, they have very limited range. This usually means that homeowners end up turning them on at high volumes to get maximum airflow and penetrate the entire room.

However, window units really only work in the room they're in. This means that you would need to be running several units throughout your house to keep it cool. When you are trying to power 3 or 4 units at once, the electricity bills are going to be much higher than if you have central AC.

They Aren't Very Stylish

You also need to think about how window AC units look. That is, they create an eyesore on the inside and outside of your house. These big metal and plastic appliances aren't exactly stylish. In the long run, with multiple rooms, central HVAC is going to be much more efficient. The initial cost of installing central AC is going to be far more than that of installing even 3 or 4 window units. However, the longterm savings and energy efficiency make it worth it for many homeowners.

Cool off Your AC Bill

Every summer, I agonized over energy bills that would shoot into the stratosphere as a result of my efforts to keep cool in the heat. Every time I turned the temperature down, my bills increased. This summer, I decided to take some of the control over my energy bill back. I installed reflective film on my windows that reduced the amount of light and heat coming into the house. I started serving more cold meals or asking my husband to barbecue outside, so that my air conditioner didn't have to compete with the hot stove, and I started doing laundry at night to reduce appliance heat in the house at peak times. I also had ceiling fans installed. So far, the difference in my bill has been tremendous. This blog is a way for me to explore other ways to reduce energy drain during the summer months.
