Repairing Problems That AC Systems Often Encounter

Blog

Air conditioning problems can be an urgent matter for you to have to address during the spring and summer months. Unfortunately, these issues can be fairly common due to the complex nature of air conditioning systems, creating many opportunities for failures and malfunctions.

Dirty Coils

Your air conditioning system will have a number of coils. These coils are designed to allow the unit to radiate much of the heat that it may have absorbed. If they were to become extremely dirty, it could have a severe impact on the performance of the system since the dirt and dust may actually be able to insulate the coils. This could prevent them from being able to effectively dispel the heat that has been absorbed. Regularly cleaning these coils will be a necessary step for preventing these performance problems, and this can help to reduce wear on the unit as it will allow the AC system to more efficiently cool the air.

Overheating

Overheating is not a problem that many people may associate with their air conditioning systems. However, overheating can be a common source of substantial performance problems for these systems. When the unit starts to overheat, its cooling systems will shut down to prevent major damage from occurring. As a result, the unit may only blow warm or even hot air into the interior of the house. If you are noticing that the system starts to do this after running for a short period of time, it may indicate that urgent repairs are needed to prevent more serious damage from occurring to the system.

Decreased Airflow

Your air conditioning system will need to be able to force air through the ducting at fairly high speeds if it is to be adequately distributed throughout the entire home. To accomplish this, the unit will have a strong blower in it. This is essentially a large fan that can act to move the air through the ducting network. Problems with the blower can often be a cause of the unit having poor airflow coming from the interior vents. However, it is also possible for these problems to arise due to obstructions that could form in either the exterior unit or the ducting system itself. When the sources of the decreased airflow are obstructions, repairs need to be completed soon to avoid the risk of the blower system burning itself out due to the added strain the obstruction may place on it.

Cool off Your AC Bill

Every summer, I agonized over energy bills that would shoot into the stratosphere as a result of my efforts to keep cool in the heat. Every time I turned the temperature down, my bills increased. This summer, I decided to take some of the control over my energy bill back. I installed reflective film on my windows that reduced the amount of light and heat coming into the house. I started serving more cold meals or asking my husband to barbecue outside, so that my air conditioner didn't have to compete with the hot stove, and I started doing laundry at night to reduce appliance heat in the house at peak times. I also had ceiling fans installed. So far, the difference in my bill has been tremendous. This blog is a way for me to explore other ways to reduce energy drain during the summer months.
